At the Millstream on-ramp:

West Shore RCMP says the driver lost control just east of the Millstream Road overpass to Highway 1, which caused the car to roll over several times before coming to a rest in the northbound lanes.

Reportedly the time of the incident was just ahead of 9:13 pm (that’s when the call was received by West Shore RCMP).

There was snowfall in the morning of that day (enough to keep many people off the roads until things warmed up in the afternoon); roads were clear but may have been icy or slick by evening when temperatures had fallen below 0°C. As a weather reference, there still was snow on grassy areas next to the road (according to photos at the scene).

Minor injuries:

The driver and passenger suffered minor injuries and were able to extract themselves from the car. “Remarkably no other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash,” said Cst Andrew Matheson, Media Relations Officer, West Shore RCMP.

“The driver, a 24-year-old Sooke man, displayed signs of alcohol impairment prompting the officers to conduct an impaired investigation which revealed that he was over the legal limit of blood alcohol concentration.

The driver was issued a 90-day immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for a period of 30 days.

Impaired driving is leading cause of collision-related fatalities:

The public is reminded to call 9-1-1- to report impaired drivers, especially as impaired driving is the leading cause of collision-related fatalities in BC.

“In this instance the driver wrecked a very nice car for no reason and is incredibly lucky that he did not kill or seriously injure himself, his passenger, or anyone else,” said Cst Matheson.
