King Charles III will deliver Canada’s Speech from the Throne on May 27 in the House of Commons.
The King and his wife, Queen Camilla, will be in Ottawa on May 26 and 27 to attend the State Opening of Parliament.

The announcement of this news was made by Prime Minister Mark Carney in his first post-election speech since the April 28, 2025 general election.
“We will have the privilege of welcoming His Majesty King Charles III, who will deliver Canada’s Speech from the Throne on May 27. This will be the firs time in nearly 50 years that Canada’s Monarch takes part in the State Opening of Parliament,” said Carney in a statement today.
“This historic honour matches the weight of our times,” said Carney in the statement issued by the Prime Minister’s office.
“Canada has a steadfast defender in our sovereign,” said Carney, at a time when this country is under siege from economic pressures and threats against our sovereignty by the United States President and his administration.
They’ve been here before:
This will be Charles’ 20th visit to Canada and Camilla’s fifth.
Governor General:
Governor General Mary Simon issued a statement about the importance of the visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla:
“Our Canadian identity is deeply rooted in our constitution and this visit highlights the enduring relationship between Canada and the Crown. Now more than ever, we need to come together to ensure a future that builds on our shared global values of democracy, equality and peace.”
Throne Speech:
Carney had issued an invitation to King Charles to deliver the speech, and the Monarch accepted.
For any parliament in Canada, the Throne Speech is delivered ahead of a new parliamentary session. Normally, for the Canadian House of Commons, it would be delivered by the Governor General who is the King’s representative in Canada.
Currently Mary Simon is Canada’s Governor General.
In provinces across Canada, Throne Speeches are delivered by the province’s Lieutenant Governor.
