There were high hopes for the 2022 Invictus Games to be held in Victoria. With a range of accessible sport venues, vibrant hospitality industry and mild climate, Victoria was one of two cities on the final shortlist.
But yesterday there was a quiet moment of disappointment when Prince Harry’s video announcement was made that the games will be held in Dusseldorf, Germany in 2022. Prince Harry said that “another country has been welcomed to the games”, and that “the story continues”.
This year the 2020 Invictus Games will be held in The Hague, a coastal town in the Netherlands. Prince Harry said there will be 20 countries participating, including now Belgium and the Republic of Korea.
The Invictus Games are an international adaptive multi-sport event, created by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and their associated veterans take part in nine sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing.
This year is the sixth Invictus Games, and going forward is being held every two years.
