Today Japan marks the 75th anniversary of Hiroshima bombing, supported with recognition from around the world. The annual peace ceremony in Japan has been scaled back this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s presence, Hiroshima’s mayor called on world leaders to commit more seriously to nuclear disarmament.
“It is the 75th anniversary of the nuclear attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and way past the time for Canada to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons,” says Randall Garrison, MP (Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke).
Garrison is the Critic for Defence, Justice, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. He has worked to ensure Canadian Forces members have the training, equipment, and support they need to defend Canada and promote peace.
Garrison is also vice-chair of the House of Commons Canada-Israel Interparliamentary Group (CAIL).
Working in the local constituency:
During the pandemic, Garrison — like many MPs who are not a handy distance to Ottawa — has been serving his constituency remotely, working from his home office and dropping into his constituency office occasionally as required.
The Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke constituency includes the Department of National Defence base at Esquimalt, both urban and rural areas, fishing and ocean sectors and concerns, and a large range of small businesses including in the tourism sector.
