Together these two high-profile BC NDP candidates cover most of the west side of south Vancouver Island.
The BC NDP candidate in Langford-Juan de Fuca is John Horgan, who has held the riding since 2005. He became leader of the BC NDP party in 2014 and in 2017 his NDP government was formed. He has served as premier for 3.5 years during 2017-2020. The riding includes Langford, Highlands, Sooke and the Juan de Fuca areas of East Sooke and out to Port Renfrew.
John Horgan is a strong proponent for public education and leading society to make BC better and to help families get ahead. Leader of the BC New Democratic Party, John has spent most of his life on southern Vancouver Island, and has been an MLA since 2005. John is the first to tell you that much of his success in life comes from the faith others had in him – a generous gift he’s committed to giving back to the people of BC.
The BC NDP candidate in Esquimalt-Metchosin is Mitzi Dean, who was first elected to the BC Legislature in 2017. She has been the Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity for 3.5 years. The riding includes Esquimalt, Colwood, Metchosin and areas of View Royal.
Mitzi Dean has spent the last 30 years helping the most vulnerable people in the est shore community. As former executive director of the Pacific Centre Family Services Association, Mitzi oversaw a team that every year helped 1,600 women, children, families, seniors, and men who were affected by trauma, violence, and mental health challenges. As an important member of John Horgan’s BC NDP government, Mitzi has been committed to affordable, accessible child care, protecting our coast, and investing in affordable housing. A champion for women’s rights, she has also served as British Columbia’s first Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity.
