Leaders today:

Leaders have criss-crossed the country through the 35-day campaign. In the last days of a campaign usually they go to places where they want to solidify voter support and/or where they think they can flip a seat from being held by the incumbent candidate or party.

Today all major party leaders revised their schedules as a result of the mass crowd attack in Vancouver last night.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney delivered a prime ministerial message and skipped at least two of his cross-country campaign pit stops. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre attended a Filiipino church. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh dropped about three campaign meet-ups with supporters and visited a church in the afternoon today. Green Party Co-Leader Elizabeth May attended a church service in the morning.

Many eyes on BC:

When the polls close in British Columbia at 9 pm Pacific Daylight Time, it will be midnight in Ontario and later than that in Atlantic Canada. Political analysis shows that voting results in BC may well tip the final outcome (seat count / majority or minority government) of the final outcome.

There are 343 ridings across the country. The 45th Parliament will have 343 Members of Parliament.

Many people will probably be staying up late Monday night (into Tuesday morning) to hear about the results of this election that is considered consequential for the future economy and sovereignty of Canada.

Focus on Vancouver Island seats:

Here on Vancouver Island the NDP will be aiming to hold onto the six seats that they have held almost entirely since 2011.

vancouver island, map, federal MPs
There are seven federal electoral areas on Vancouver Island. Six have been NDP (orange) since 2011; one has been Green since 2011.
  • There are strong NDP incumbents in Cowichan-Malahat-Langford (Alistair MacGregor), Courtenay-Alberni (Gord Johns), and Victoria (Laurel Collins); in Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke candidate Maja Tait is likely benefiting by the strong ground game established by Randall Garrison (who held the seat from 2011 through 2024).
  • The Green Party will be aiming to hold onto their one seat on Vancouver Island, where Green Party Co-Leader has held the Saanich-Gulf Islands seat since 2011. The Greens are also hoping to win in Nanaimo-Ladysmith with their candidate Paul Manly by winning over Lisa Marie Barron who won there for the NDP in 2021.
  • The Liberals have been working hard to try and flip some of those orange seats to red, particularly in the south Vancouver Island area (Victoria, Cowichan-Malahat-Langford, Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke). Liberal Leader Mark Carney has made two visits to Victoria (April 6/7 and April 23) and may arrive here again tonight. He has remarked several times during his visits as to how much he likes the weather here. The Liberals have not held a seat on Vancouver Island since 2008.
  • The Conservatives have been working hard to try and flip central and north island seats from orange to blue, with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre making several visits over the past year to Nanaimo and areas north of there.

Key issues:

Key issues in this election have been dealing with the US economic threat, affordability, housing and health-care including how mental health issues are impacting public safety.

Last-day poll:

First let’s look at the problems with polls.

  • Polls capture just a moment in time and are often produced for specific outlets (perhaps with different questions or questions worded differently depending on the client).
  • Polls also have the challenge of not getting through on cell phones if the number shows as unknown. Certain segments of the population could be missed entirely.
  • Polls miss the aspect of the power of a candidate’s local authenticity.
  • Not everyone reveals their true information when asked by a stranger on a sudden poll.
  • People may transpose their interest in a particular leader for the party they’ll end up voting for as they choose a local candidate on their ballot.

Meanwhile, we note that the latest poll this evening April 27 (by Nanos for CTV) shows the Liberals at 42%, Conservatives at 39%, and the NDP at 10%. That shows the NDP two points higher than a poll (by Nanos for The Globe and Mail) done in the three days previous (April 24 to 26) which showed the Liberals at 43%, Conservatives at 38.9% and the NDP at 8%.

Party popularity does not directly translate to seats won. Smart candidates stick to what they know about their voter base and regional issues, and the strength of their teams to get the vote out on election day.
