After learning he had become a millionaire, the first thing on a Courtenay man’s to-do list was goat-shopping.
Hobby farmer Robert de Haas thought the $1 million winning figure was missing a decimal point when he first saw his winnings.
“I was at the Shell gas station in Courtenay just checking my tickets, and it was the last one I checked,” de Haas said.
“There was a guy standing behind me and he asked if he just saw right. To be honest, at first I thought there was a decimal.”
Bought the ticket in Campbell River:
The winner, who purchased the winning Maxmillions ticket for the June 15, 2021 draw at the Peninsula Co-op in Campbell River, admits his wife didn’t believe him at first. “I had to take a screenshot from when I checked it on my phone and send it to her.”
Also fixing up the barn:
In addition to expanding his goat farm, de Haas says he would like to rebuild the barn that he and his wife own. The rest of his winnings, he said, will be set aside for retirement.
Depending on the breed and sex, a goat can cost anywhere from $100 to $800. With a million bucks, that’s a lot of goats.
Lottery profile:
Lotto Max is a nationwide lottery game drawn on Tuesdays and Fridays after 7:30 pm (Pacific Time). Players can purchase tickets at lottery retailers or at PlayNow.com. Winning numbers and group release forms can be found online at www.bclc.com.
Lottery sales were significantly down in the BC Government’s 2020-2021 fiscal year, it was stated by Finance Minister Selina Robinson today in a news conference. That was due to people’s reluctance to spend during the economic challenges of the COVID pandemic.
