Ah, the fate of your Halloween jack-o-lanterns, what will it be?
You’ve worked hard to create amazing faces on your Halloween pumpkins. Now it’s time for the next phase of their journey.
In days gone by, many carved pumpkins from Halloween night would end up rotting for days or weeks outdoors, or even be smashed on streets!
Seeds, pie and composting:
You’ve already gutted out the pumpkins and saved the seeds, right? Either for roasting with salt for a delicious snack or to dry them for use in your garden next year.
If you got all the innards of your pumpkin, you’ll be using the pulp for pumpkin pie, muffins or pancakes!
Nowadays many people do composting in their own yard or provide kitchen scraps (and old pumpkins) to a centralized service.
In come some community options:
- Friday November 1 – Spooky Pumpkin Walk in Sooke, Drop off your morning-after-Halloween jack o lanterns at Pineridge Park in Sooke, anytime after 1 pm. LED lights will be inserted into the pumpkins for use during an evening walk (5 to 7:30 pm) starting at Pineridge Park (6600 block of Rhodonite Drive or take the path off Pineridge Place). Walk the lit trails and enjoy some hot chocolate. Pumpkins will be composted afterward to help local farmers.
- Satruday November 2 – Smashing Pumpkins event at Westshore Town Centre. Get your pumpkin smashed from the top of a firetruck ladder. It’s a fundraiser by Langford Fire Rescue for the BC Burn Fund, held each year in the parking lot at Westshore Town Centre. This year the event will be held on Sunday November 2 from 10 am to 2 pm. Bring leftover jack-o-lanterns to drop from the 100-ft fire engine ladder.
