Canada’s Premiers will be hosted for their Council of the Federation (COF) 2024 Fall Meeting in Toronto by COF Chair Ontario Premier Doug Ford on December 15 and 16 at the Hilton Toronto Airport Hotel.
The closing news conference will be held at 2 pm Eastern (11 am Pacific) on Monday December 16. [Previously was set for 3 pm EST]
The Fall Meeting of Canada’s Premiers is very likely to focus mostly on the ‘Team Canada’ approach in responding to the US President-elect’s threat of 25% tariffs, which would come into effect as soon as January 22, 2025.
So far, two of Canada’s Premiers have been undertaking ‘the charm offensive’ in American media — Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith appeared on Fox TV this week to discuss the economic aspects of what Canada and the US have in common.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Trump over dinner last Friday night in Florida. That was just days after Trudeau met with Canada’s Premiers in a hastily assembled Zoom call meeting to discuss building the ‘Team Canada’ approach.
Today in BC media Premier David Eby said the Team Canada approach is not about all Premiers saying exactly the same things but all of them pulling for a united Canadian front.
President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn in at the presidential inauguration on January 20, 2025. He has promised to sign tariffs into effect on his first day in office.
