After now 16 days of postal workers being on strike, and talks failing last week when the mediator said the sides were too far apart, Canada Post Corporation has today issued a statement on their Negotiations page:
“In an effort to move talks forward, Canada Post earlier today presented the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) with a comprehensive framework for reaching negotiated agreements. The framework includes proposals to bring greater flexibility to the Corporation’s delivery model, while also demonstrating movement on other key issues.”
“It is our hope that these proposals will reignite discussions and, together with the support of mediators, help the parties work toward final agreements. To facilitate talks, we will not be providing further details outside the negotiations process at this time.”
“We understand the impact CUPW’s national strike is having on our employees, customers and so many Canadians. Canada Post remains committed to negotiating new collective agreements that will provide the certainty everyone is looking for.”
Disruption to consumers and businesses across Canada has in some cases been significant in this holiday season without letter and parcel delivery.
Six years of loss:
Canada Post has lost money for six years in a row now (2018 to 2023). Taking a new approach to their business model seems appropriate.
No incoming mail from the USA:
Meanwhile, there will be no postal mail coming to Canada from the United States until the Canada Post workers strike is resolved, as announced by the US Postal Service today.
