Tonight there is only one power outage on all of Vancouver Island (north and south), and that’s in East Sooke.
It was reported at 6:58 pm and a crew was assigned right away, as reported on the BC Hydro outage list at 7:06 pm.
BC Hydro says that 1,161 of their customers are without power at the moment. That’s a big area of the sparsely-populated East Sooke area on the west side of south Vancouver Island.
Weather is calm. No rain or wind. Temperatures are above 0°C. Cause of the outage is under investigation. [Update 8:26 pm – turns out a wire was down, due to a motor vehicle accident. Crew is on site. At 10:48 pm the work was suspended.]
[Update January 23: Power was restored at 10 am on Sunday January 23.]
East Sooke is within the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area. Juan de Fuca Emergency Program Coordinator Jeri Grant says power outages are a good reminder to always be prepared for outages and other emergencies.
Battery-operated lighting is important, as well as an alternative heat source in winter. Blankets and other warm clothing are useful to have in your emergency kit in winter.
