ISLAND SOCIAL TRENDS ARCHIVE
EDITORIAL by Mary P Brooke | *First published* on June 30, 2017 as a Publisher’s Note
In this graduation season, I will take the opportunity to publicly congratulate my son, James Twigg, 29, for this season completing his Master of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Simon Fraser University, built upon his undergrad degree in Applied Math from the University of Victoria.
As AI charges all of us into the future, it is the science/math/tech-educated among us who will be driving the edge of everyday change in our society.
The counterpoint to that is determining the socioeconomic and ethical questions of merging the robotic mind into an interface with the human mind and our practical circumstances including jobs.
That’s where politicians and governments come into play, giving us good laws and regulations to live by.
Together, it’s a brave new future, for wise souls to create and guide.
This editorial by Mary P Brooke was first published on page 2 in the June 30, 2017 print-PDF edition of West Shore Voice News. The publication that was in print and PDF format during 2011-2020 changed to fully digital in March 2020 and the name of the publication was changed to Island Social Trends in August 2020, now presented in this news portal at www.islandsocialtrends.ca .
