Due to the extreme heat today, some blue bin curbside pickup in the west shore will be done later tonight or tomorrow.

That applies to customers whose regular pickup day is Monday. This has impacted customers in Langford and perhaps other areas.

“The CRD’s contractor will make every effort to collect missed blue bins in the Langford area on Tuesday, June 29,” said CRD today in a release issued around 12:30 pm. Certainly by noon the heat would have evidently impacted the health safety of truckers driving out on the roads.

A ‘heat dome’ has been hovering over all of BC for the last three days. Today the heat has reached record-breaking temperatures, on the heels of yesterday’s recording-breaking temperature of 37°C in the Greater Victoria area. Health advisories were issued by Island Health, and Environment Canada issued heat warnings.

Leave bins out overnight:

The Capital Regional District (CRD) asks affected customers to leave their bins out overnight, if pickup hasn’t already occurred by 9 pm this evening.

There is little to no wind, so there shouldn’t be a problem with things blowing around in the neighbourhood.

What can be put to the curbside:

  • In the blue bags you can put clean paper.
  • In the blue box put paper packaging that contained liquids when sold (cartons, coffee cups, ice cream containers, etc.), steel packaging (e.g. snack containers), aluminum containers (pie tins, cans), and plastic containers.
  • Use a separate bin (with a special pink sticker) to put out clean glass bottles and jars.
