The heavily travelled roundabout conjoining the Glen Lake area and the Alouette/Parkdale area of ‘old Westhills‘ will get some curbside repairs earlier next week (week of Feb 21-24).
Earlier today this work had been announced as scheduled for tomorrow (Friday February 17) but due to a “limited work window” with the Family Day long weekend coming up, the project has been rescheduled, says City of Langford Engineering Technologist Phillip Le Ross.
Family Day is Monday February 20.
When the work is done at the roundabout there will be some intermittent traffic delays during single-lane alternating traffic flow, said Langford Engineering in their first advisory.
Traffic control will be on-site directing traffic, says City of Langford Engineering.
Alouette heavily travelled:
Alouette Drive has been a heavily travelled thorough-fare through Westhills for drivers heading between Sooke Road and Langford Parkway. The roundabout also gives access to the back entrance of the Belmont Secondary School parking lot which is heavily travelled for school use and the adjacent sporting fields and facilities, and the Jacklin Road retail area beyond.
- A few years ago (in summer 2021) vertical lane pipes were added to Alouette Drive, to help slow down traffic and reduce the number of vehicles choosing that route.
- And before that (June 2020), a new 4-way stop at Alouette and Langford Lake Road was installed to help increase safety at that previously unmarked intersection.
The new vertical lane markers make for effectively slimmer driving lanes, especially having a visual impact at night. Larger vehicles may sometimes choose other routes.
The West Shore Parkway was opened in 2017 to help alleviate traffic on Alouette Drive and on Jacklin Road, which both run north-south. Both Alouette and Jacklin appear to have maintained heavy traffic loads, as the city continues to grow and some drivers avoid the steep grade of West Shore Parkway.
