The driver of the car that did not stop and rear-ended another vehicle last Friday on Highway 1 was a prohibited driver, says West Shore RCMP.

“The driver was prohibited under the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) from operating a vehicle. This was stemming from prior infractions under the MVA where his licence was taken away due to a number of outstanding traffic violations against him,” said Cpl Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer, West Shore RCMP in a statement to Island Social Trends.

The prior infractions were not specified. But clearly this is someone who was not supposed to be driving and has — in this case — contributed to another incident on the road.

The driver will be facing charges under the MVA, it was confirmed by Cpl Saggar.

When and where:

It was on Friday January 6 that the crash happened in the northbound lane around 2:50 pm on the Trans Canada Highway (Highway 1) north of Finlayson Arm Road near Goldstream Park.

The road was closed for traffic flow in both directions, northbound and southbound.

One car on top of another:

The collision occurred when traffic slowed down suddenly in the northbound lane. Most vehicles came to a safe stop. However, one vehicle, a 2007 Chrysler Sebring did not stop and rear-ended a 2021 Subaru Forrester.

The impact of the collision was so hard that the Green 2021 Subaru would up rolling up over the hood and on top of the roof of the Sebring.

“The driver of the Sebring was a prohibited driver and will be facing charges under the Motor Vehicle Act,” said Cpl Saggar, Media Relations.

“Remarkably no injuries were reported in this collision,” she said in a media release earlier today.

Traffic impact:

The lanes were reopened around 3:45 pm, but City of Langford Engineering said at 4 pm to still expect delays.

According to RCMP, hundreds of commuters experienced delays while crews worked to clear the scene. Both vehicles were removed by tow trucks.

Traffic control was on-site directing traffic.
