The Wounded Warriors 2020 Run saw eight relay runners tackling 600 km from Port Hardy to Victoria, wrapping up their 8-day journey on Sunday March 1 in Langford and downtown Victoria.
In the morning at Westin Bear Mountain the organization received a donation of $3,500 from the City of Langford as raised at the Mayor’s golf tournament back in summer 2019, and $9,000 in additional Langford development community donations, for a total of $12,500.
In addition to the funds donated from the Mayor’s golf tournament (2020 tournament info), the following companies each donated $1,000:
• DB Services
• WestShore Developers Association
• Southpoint
• Keycorp
• Woodsmere Holdings Corp
• Westbrook Consulting Ltd
• Virtuoso Capital Ventures
• Golf for Kids
• Ecoasis
Overall, the event raised $155,000 this year for Wounded Warriors Canada programs (exceeding $125,000 as raised last year) toward its programs that deliver support to first responders (including firefighters, paramedics and police) who deal with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other impacts of front-line service.
On Sunday, for lunch the runners and group stopped at the Langford Legion, where Premier John Horgan was on hand outside to greet them.
Due to protests this past week at the BC Legislature, the finale was relocated to Market Square in downtown Victoria (instead of behind the BC Parliament Buildings).
The run made its way through Langford from 9 am to 2:30 pm in the west shore on Sunday March 1 before concluding in downtown Victoria. There were some minor traffic delays as runners arrived on Highway 1, then taking Leigh Road to Bear Mountain Resort, then heading past Western Speedway and through to the Millstream commercial area with a pit stop at Serious Coffee in Millstream Village, then at the Langford Legion on Station Road before heading to downtown Victoria.
Members of local communities have been involved each step of the way through the eight day run.
