Incident reports from West Shore RCMP this week:
MISSING PERSON DISCOVERED: Joshua Bennett, 31, was found dead in Glen Lake on Sunday March 31. After his family was notified, the news was made public on April 1.
CHILD CARE INCIDENT: The West Shore RCMP Serious Crimes Unit is conducting an investigation involving an injured child age 11 months, at a daycare in the Langford area. The unnamed daycare has been fully cooperative in this investigation. Details of the investigation are not being provided at this time; the cause of injury (including possible skull fracture) has yet to be determined. No arrests have been made and no charges laid. The Ministry of Children and Family Development as well as Island Health have been notified with respect to any child care or safety concerns. Investigators have not yet determined if there was any criminality. File # 2019-5714
SEXUAL ASSAULT: On a trail at Thetis Lake at approximately 7:20 pm on April 1 a man who reported having been sexually assaulted while at Thetis Lake Park in View Royal. While out for a jog around the lake the man had encountered another male (the suspect), on a part of the trail. The victim moved over to allow the suspect to pass him. The suspect then got closer to the victim and grabbed the victim’s genitals before walking away. “This is a disturbing crime,” says Cst. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer, on Tuesday morning April 2. “The victim was obviously in shock but was able to record the suspect on his cell phone as he was walking away.” The recording assisted police in identifying the suspect who has since been arrested for sexual assault. No other reports of sexual assault of this nature have been reported to police, said Saggar. ROBBERY: On Wednesday April 3 at approximately 1 pm the West Shore RCMP received a report of a robbery. The incident took place on the Galloping Goose trail at the very West end of Rowils Crescent near Glen Lake in Langford. The male victim was approached by a male suspect who brandished a knife and demanded the victim’s bag. The victim was unharmed and called the police. West Shore Frontline officers as well as the Bike unit and Police Dog Services immediately flooded the area and are looking for the suspect. The suspect is described as 30-40 years old, 6’3″, medium build, wearing a black hoodie and pants. The suspect was last seen running on the board walk at Glen Lake. IN MEMORIAM: April 5, 2019. Three years ago today, Langford and all of Greater Victoria woke to the tragic news of a fatal car crash that took the life of Cst Sarah Beckett in the wee hours of April 5, 2016. Memorials and tributes were held over the weeks, months and years to follow. Local fundraisers and events have evolved over the past few years to remember Cst Beckett. Today the West Shore RCMP issued a simple memorial photo. The next fundraiser is a family event on Saturday April 13, in support of the Sarah Beckett Memorial Scholarship as sponsored by the Capital Regional District (CRD) Traffic Safety Commission. The 5 km walk/run fundraiser will start/finish at Belmont Secondary School, 3041 Langford Lake Rd. Happening from 8 am to 1 pm. SHOOTING: A shooting in a home at 2884 Jacklin Road near Dunford Ave in Langford was resolved by West Shore RCMP, said Cst Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP. A witness had called 911 around 12:30 am on Friday morning, April 5. A man in his 30s had been shot inside the house; he was later treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. After 2:10 am along Highway 14, a man was found in a road-checked vehicle (a woman was driving the car, heading west to Sooke) and later arrested in Sooke by Sooke RCMP after a foot chase and being tasered. The driver was also arrested on outstanding warrants, said Sooke RCMP Staff Sgt Jeff McArthur.
