Rising COVID numbers on the University of Victoria (UVic) campus has led to cancellation of in-person exams effective today, December 13.

Apparently COVID exposures that have led to this change had happened off-campus. But the proximity of students in the same indoor spaces for prolonged periods to write exams is of concern at this time.

Students will be advised as to the alternatives for writing their remaining exams for this Fall 2021 semester.

Libraries open, meetings online:

Libraries and study spaces remain open (but no food/drink).

Students living in residence will continue to have access to the MOD dining facility and must follow all of the health and safety measures in place.

Any meetings should now be held online, says UVic.

Sports continues:

Athletics, recreation and varsity sports will continue, with health and safety protocols in place.

Consultation with Island Health:

The decision about changing the exam locations was made in consultation with Island Health, says UVic.

Students who are symptomatic should continue to follow our guidance and get tested by Island Health as necessary. For information about symptoms, testing and contacting your instructor, please see the Health and Safety section of our website.

Comments from UVic:

“These recent events serve as a reminder to us all to take extra care this holiday season. Our university population has done tremendous work in getting vaccinated but it is still important to monitor ourselves for symptoms, and refrain from gathering if we feel unwell, to help protect family and friends.”

“We appreciate that implementing these additional precautionary measures may make the end of term more challenging and we thank you for your contribution and commitment to the university community’s health and well-being.”
