The public is invited to learn about improvements planned for Highway14 at Idlemore Road in Sooke.
The intersection is intended to serve the safety needs of Saseenos Elementary School which fronts onto the provincial highway across from Idlemore Road on which there are several industrial properties.

There is also a District of Sooke municipal works yard across the street off Kaltasin Road.
To date, students and families seeking to cross the highway have been assisted by a crossing guard at a crosswalk.

The posted speed on Highway 14 is 60 km/h.
Schools on Highway 14:
Saseenos Elementary is a small school built in 1959. The school is scheduled for a roof replacement this summer.
The Saseenos school offers one of the two Nature K programs within the Sooke School District SD62. The enrolment school is over-capacity (189 students in attendance while official capacity is 177). There are 44 staff (full-time and part-time).
Two other SD62 schools also front onto the busy Highway 14: Sooke Elementary and John Muir Elementary.
Public info session:
A public information session will be held on Monday June 23 from 4 to 7 pm in the gymnasium at Saseenos Elementary School, 6066 Sooke Road, Sooke.
Staff from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit will present information including design details for the improved intersection, which will increase safety and ease the flow of traffic for drivers, pedestrians and people cycling or rolling in the area.

These safety improvements will also provide better access to Saseenos Elementary school and support future economic development opportunities for T’Sou-ke First Nation.
Who will be there:
Ministry staff will provide a design overview and be available to answer questions about the Highway 14 – Idlemore Intersection project.
SD62 Secretary-Treasurer Brian Jonker will be in attendance.
Although it is summer, key local proponents for school safety and any of the public that have had continuing concern over the years for safety on Highway 14 are likely to attend.
Six-month pause:
The June 23, 2025 session was originally scheduled for January 29, 2025. This was evidently to allow for input by the SD62 school district.
