Pacific FC’s left back Marcel de Jong was injured in a pre-season practice session on March 13. Following that, he had a successful surgery today March 15 to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon.

“Recovery time is variable for this type of injury,” said Randy Celebrini, Director of Sports Science, Pacific FC. “But he will likely not return to play this season.”

De Jong was the 11th player added to the roster, at an evening event announcement on February 19 in downtown Victoria.

A defender who can also step into midfield, de Jong spent the previous three years with Vancouver Whitecaps FC following stops at Sporting Kansas City and the Ottawa Fury. The 32-year-old’s professional career includes 250 appearances with top tier clubs in Europe and North America.

Pacific FC CEO Rob Friend will be looking for a new player to fill de Jong’s spot.

The inaugural Canadian Premier League season with seven teams across Canada starts on April 28 with the first game being held against the Halifax team at Westhills Stadium in Langford.
