This year’s annual Metchosin Community Day drew out a crowd of all ages.
There was a lot to see and do at the District of Metchosin municipal grounds today behind municipal hall.
The free family-fun event from 11 am to 5:30 pm included indoor and outdoor displays, on-stage and on-field entertainment, vendor booths, non-profit organization information booths. All of it with an emphasis on agriculture and community.
Some local awards were given out by Mayor and Council on stage at 1:45 pm:
- Citizen of the Year – Heather Showers (awarded by Mayor Marie-Térèse Little)
- Pioneer of the Year – Nan Brown (awarded by Jay Shutkin)
- Volunteer of the Year – Doug Sawatsky (awarded by Shari Epp)
- Volunteer Group of the Year – Emergency Communications Group (awarded by Shelly Donaldson)
- Friends of the Earth – Alison Leduc (awarded by Steve Gray)
There were no political speeches even though the BC provincial election campaign season is well underway. Two local candidates for Juan de Fuca-Malahat (which includes Metchosin) were on hand to mingle with folks: Dana LaJeunesse (BC NDP) and David Evans (BC Green).
A pet show, children’s games, sheep shearing, hayrides, and viewing of cakes, pies, and produce were among today’s activities.
Throughout the day the lamb and salmon were cooking for the salmon and barbecue dinner at 5:30 pm.
There was 4 H judging, displays and demonstrations.
