A gas leak has caused the closure of Goldstream Avenue between Peatt Road and Bryn Maur Road, starting at 4:15 pm today.
City of Langford Engineering says the road will remain closed until further notice. Langford Fire and FortistBC are on scene.
Traffic delays are to be expected. Traffic control will be on-site directing traffic.
Customer impact:
Update on February 17: A spokesperson for FortisBC says that the work to repair the natural gas line was completed by 6:30 pm yesterday.
So the gas service to about 30 local customers was offline for about 2 hours and 15 minutes. People may have been worried about safety but FortisBC told Island Social Trends that “there was no danger to the public”.
Goldstream Avenue is a busy commercial strip in downtown Langford, but there are also residential customers beyond the main avenue.
Preventable:
There is CRD water main upgrade work happening along Goldstream Avenue this year; that work is presently in the location near where the gas line damage happened.
FortisBC says the sort of third-party damage that happened to the impacted natural gas line is “preventable”.
