Canada Day will be celebrated in Langford in a new way starting this year.

Last week, the City of Langford announced its first annual Canada Day event. That will be in conjunction with the municipality’s 30th anniversary celebration.

Canada Day is of course on July 1. The first-time celebration combined with the anniversary event will take place from 10 am to 10 pm at Starlight Stadium.

Fulfilling a long-time residents request:

According to the city, Langford residents have long been asking for a Canada Day event in their community.

“And the City has listened to those wishes,” it was stated in a news release on May 19.

“Langford residents have been requesting a family-orientated Canada Day event for a long time now, and I’m glad the City could deliver on that request,” said Langford Mayor Stew Young.

“It will be an exciting long weekend in Langford with many free and affordable events for Langford residents of all ages. It is important for the community to have something fun to look forward to,” he stated in the news release.

“It has been a very challenging time over the last couple of years, and now more than ever we need to connect with friends and neighbours and get back to normal,” the long-time mayor said.

Election year:

Together with the opening of the new Langford Station cultural district on May 20, Stew Young is almost certainly teeing things up for another run at the top office in the October 15 municipal elections. He has been mayor of the City of Langford since 1992.

July 1 day-long into evening:

This free event on July 1 will feature a wide range of activities, including a pancake breakfast (by donation), live music with local musician Vince Vaccaro as the headline, face painting, and a hot wing eating contest.

There will also be back yard games on the turf, artist painting demonstrations, a blue-ribbon pie baking contest and more.

West Shore RCMP will be on-site conducting K9 Unit demonstrations, and Langford Fire Rescue will host a firefighter obstacle course.

The day will conclude with a family-friendly movie played on a massive inflatable screen on the turf. Attendees are invited to bring a blanket and enjoy a movie under the stars.

The concession and beer garden will be open all-day.

In addition to the activities planned for the day, the City will host a special presentation with local First Nations.

Multi-event Canada Day weekend:

The Canada Day and Langford’s 30th Anniversary event “will be the cherry on top”, say Langford organizations.

Calling it an epic, fun-filled long weekend in Langford, events kick off Thursday evening June 30 with a soccer game at Starlight Stadium (Pacific FC, takes on Cavalry FC).

On July 2 and 3 the Jordie Lunn Bike Park will offer an exciting lineup of events with the first annual Langford Bike Fest, including the Live Like Jordie Enduro (part of the Island Cup Enduro Series) on Saturday and the Red Bull UCI Pump Track World Championship Qualifier on Sunday.

Visit Langford.ca/events for event details (also posted on the Island Social Trends calendar page). Local residents may follow on Instagram @CityOfLangford to participate in the weekly movie vote to determine which film will be shown.
