Not even a pandemic can keep Langford classic and vintage car enthusiasts from putting on a show.
The annual Langford Show and Shine car show which in years past has attracted thousands of people to the Goldstream Avenue venue-for-the-day this year morphed into a procession of the cars along well-known city streets.
It could be said that the cruise route was every street that has special memories for Langford Mayor Stew Young — including Glen Lake and Jenkins, Goldstream Avenue near his Fountain restaurant, along Alouette Drive which was the first street with housing development in Westhills, Langford Lake Road (with the new Belmont Secondary School) and Langford Parkway (with stadium), the game-changing Leigh Road crossover to the crown jewel Bear Mountain Parkway, ending at Millstream Road in the major commercial area there.
Along Alouette Drive, local residents came out to sit in lawn chairs or stand in small groups (COVID family bubbles) to watch the procession of about 100 cars. The cars first gathered at Belmont Secondary School to get organized, then started on their route around 9:15 am.
The cruise began with a loud siren call from Engine 3 of Langford Fire Rescue, with the mayor in his sky-blue 1956 Buick Riviera Super right behind. Then the rest of the cars kept coming, one by one. The procession wrapped up with the bright and brash “I Am Langford” logo on one of the city’s promotional vans, tailed by a West Shore RCMP cruiser.
A traffic advisory was issued in the days leading up to this sunny Sunday, showing the route map. Toward the tail end of the procession a few non-parade cars got in there, a mix of old and new.
The event lasted until about 10:30 am at the Millstream Road side of town.
