Children in Canadian schools have the opportunity to learn about the system of governance in this country. That may vary across regions and across school districts.
In the west shore region of south Vancouver Island, the Sooke School District (SD62) works with the BC curriculum in this way:
“Teachers deliver the curriculum in ways that are both age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate for their students,” says the SD62 school district.
“They are encouraged to engage students in meaningful learning experiences that align with curriculum expectations, including those related to democratic participation,” says SD62.
SD62 schools are in Colwood, Langford, Sooke, Metchosin and Port Renfrew. For the most part, that is within two federal ridings:
- Esquimalt-Saanich-Sooke (including Colwood, Sooke, Metchosin, East Sooke and Juan de Fuca west of Sooke to Jordan River as served by SD62); and
- Cowichan-Malahat-Langford (including Langford, Highlands, and Juan de Fuca from Jordan River out to Port Renfrew, as served by SD62).
Mock voting:
This month, many students at the elementary, middle and secondary levels across the district have had opportunity to participate in mock voting activities.
In some cases, Elections Canada provided authentic materials to help create a more realistic experience for students.
Yesterday a Student Vote was held at Royal Bay Secondary School in Colwood. They used materials provided by Elections Canada. A total of 646 students participated, supported by 70 student volunteers who helped run the election throughout the day.
