Today Prime Minister Mark Carney met with the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum in Mexico City, Mexico.

Carney called this new collaboration and economic transformation as the beginning a new era of cooperation.

“Our values are aligned and our visions are greater,” said Carney in his remarks during a shared press conference that started around 4:15 pm Pacific Time.  

The two leaders whose countries are part of a three-country deal with the United States (i.e. CUSMA/USMCA) discussed the work ahead to elevate the Canada-Mexico partnership and create certainty, security, and prosperity for both nations.

Carney’s news release from Carney’s office said that the leaders announced a comprehensive strategic partnership and the new Canada-Mexico Action Plan, and underscored opportunities to deepen bilateral trade in areas such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and health.

Their press conference included many instances of hoping to avoid anything that would antagonize the United States.

“They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening engagement to build economic opportunities for workers and businesses, including through upcoming trade missions and frequent meetings at the ministerial level. They also committed to close coordination as preparations advance for the upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement.”

The Prime Minister and President affirmed joint priorities, including continued co-operation on border security, combating transnational organized crime, emergency preparedness, and action to address climate change.

Upcoming 3-country FIFA World Cup:

The leaders are looking forward to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the first World Cup tournament during June 11 to July 19, co-hosted by three countries – Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. – which is projected to contribute $2 billion to the Canadian economy.

All three leaders — Carney, Sheinbaum and US President Trump — are expected to attend at one of the final games, media heard today.
