BC Premier David Eby said in a 4:30 pm press conference today February 3 that retaliatory tariffs will be suspended in BC for now.
But steps will be taken by the BC government to ensure that: “BC will take the steps that are necessary to support British Columbia families and businesses, that we’ll do so in a way that grows and diversifies our economy, and does not leave us in a position that we are in right now which is being far too dependent on the United States and we’re going to come out of this stronger.”
This suspension of planned retaliatory tariffs — including taking American liquor products off retail store shelves — is based on a 30-day US tariff suspension that was announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earlier this afternoon.
The situation with US President Donald Trump threatening to impose tariffs has been fluid and continually changing.
Trudeau had two phone calls with US President Trump today, after which the US tariffs are suspended as Canada works on securing the Canada-US border against fentanyl and associated money laundering.
Earlier today, Eby did a press conference at a shipping terminal to emphasize the importance of BC critical minerals and how they are shipped to Asian and other markets.
In his 4:30 pm presser, Eby thanked Trudeau and Trump for coming together to find this temporary solution.
