A vehicle accident on Highway 1 near the Helmcken Overpass caused a traffic backup this morning during the commute from the west shore into Saanich and Victoria. It was enough of a disruption that City of Langford Engineering sent out a news release about it at 7:45 am.
Apparently the incident caused a traffic backup in areas affecting commuter traffic in and out of Langford, including around the Millstream Overpass (access to and from Highway 1, and through-traffic across main sectors of Langford):
– Northbound on Veterans Memorial Parkway, backed up to Goldstream Avenue
– On Strandlund approaching Veterans Memorial Parkway
– Northbound on Peatt Road, also backed up to Goldstream Avenue
– Eastbound on Brock Avenue approaching Peatt Road
– Southbound on Millstream Road, backed up to Treanor Avenue (drivers doing internal trips in Langford advised to re-route via Treanor to Setchfield to Florence Lake Road)
Sooke School District 62 (SD62) was notified by Langford Engineering, as to potential delays to school bus services in that traffic hub.
The vehicle incident was handled on-scene by the View Royal Fire Department. More details to come.
The west shore commute into Saanich and Victoria is sometimes called the Colwood Crawl, referring to a slow pace of traffic but the west shore commuter traffic issues impact people living in a broad area of the west shore including Langford, Colwood, and Sooke.
