Pretty much everywhere you turn there will be something fun going on for Halloween this year in the west shore. Most of them are free for the community to attend.

- Langford Halloween Open House. By Langford Fire Rescue. Hot dogs, candy, hot chocolate, entertainment. 5:30 to 8:30 pm. At all three stations in Langford: 2625 Peatt Rd, 3205 Happy Valley Rd, 2872 Sooke Lake Rd. www.langford.ca

- Bear Mountain Halloween Spooktacular. 5:30 to 9 pm. Fireworks at dusk. Food concession, photo booth, music. www.bearmountain.ca
Of course, it’s important to be safe on Halloween. Over the years, doing fireworks in residential backyards has been discouraged in favour of community gatherings — some of them still with a bonfire (as in Colwood this year).
The other aspect of safety is the unfortunate few cases that happen where handouts of treats around neighbours comes with problems. Inspect all candy and other items that your children receive during the ‘trick or treat’ activities.
Young trick or treaters should always be accompanied by an adult. Wear bright, reflective costumes if you’re out around the neighbourhoods at night and stay on the sidewalk or clearly marked pathways.
Retail stores, restaurants and coffee shops around the west shore get into the action with decorative window displays and decor for the Halloween season.
