Further construction of the new multi-use overpass at the McKenzie Interchange will result in closure of one southbound lane on Highway 1 at McKenzie, on Friday night October 4 from 8 pm until 5:30 am on Saturday morning October 5.
The southbound slow lane will be closed, but the other lane remains open, says the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure (MOTI).
This traffic adjustment is to allow for placement of the final overpass girder.
The southbound off-ramp to Admirals Road will also be closed overnight. Drivers can turn right onto Admirals at the intersection or use the Helmcken Road exit.
During this lane closure, MOTI advises motorists to drive with care through the project site and obey all signage and posted speed limits.
Two similar closures took place on the evenings of September 30 and October 3, for northbound and southbound lanes.
The new multi-use McKenzie Interchange overpass will open to pedestrians and cyclists in the spring of 2020 and connect to the Galloping Goose Regional Trail.
MOTI says it anticipates removing the traffic lights on Highway 1 at McKenzie Avenue at some point, possibly “by this winter”.
The entire infrastructure improvement which includes landscaping and transit facilities is expected to be completed by the summer of 2020, according to MOTI.
