King Charles III today delivered an upbeat but heavily nuanced speech to the United States Congress.
Seated to his left was Queen Camilla.
Behind the King sat US Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

During his 20-minute speech, the gathered members of congress and senate gave the King at least eight standing ovations, notably for being there, as well as for mentioning:
- acknowledging the significance of the 911 attack,
- the need for defence of Ukraine,
- valuing people of all faiths,
- safeguarding nature,
- that violence is not a path to success,
- that executive powers must be subject to checks and balances, and
- that the Christian faith is “a firm anchor” for himself and the world more broadly.
As head of the Commonwealth, King Charles was also indirectly representing Canada and Australia among others. He did not specifically mention Canada in this period of Canada-US trade relations but several times emphasized his role in leading the Commonwealth.
By nature a historian, King Charles made numerous references to key moments and noted leaders of the United States over 250 years, while also highlighting his own family dynasty going back to King George III (during who reign the United States was formed).
He referenced the red, white an blue of the British and US flags. He drew a ‘compare and contrast’ of “the two Georges” at the time of the writing of the United States Constitution: King George III of England and George Washington the first US president.
He referenced the red, white an blue of the British and US flags.
The importance of nature:
The King gave some focus to the importance of nature and taking care of this planet. In doing so he reached back over 60 million years to when it has been proven by science that the mountains of Scotland were a shared mountain range with the Appalachian Mountains of the eastern United States. Fast-forward to modern times he noted the nature preservation initiatives of US President Theodore Roosevelt as a “glorious heritage”.
King Charles urged the audience to be part of a need to address the collapse of critical natural systems which he described as “nature’s own economy”. Protecting the planet is part of assuring humanity’s prosperity and security, he added.
In 2021 King Charles III (then the Prince of Wales) issued The Terra Carta (Earth Charter) — a strategic plan to put sustainability at the heart of the private sector. It serves as a roadmap for businesses to accelerate to net-zero by 2030, prioritizing nature, people, and planet. It is the guiding mandate for the Sustainable Markets Initiative.
Similarly, in 2023, King Charles III launched the Astra Carta in the belief that stewardship of the planet must now extend to the “infinite wonders of the universe”. He mentioned the Astra Carta in a letter to Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen last month ahead of Hansen’s participation int he Artemis II mission to see and being charting the far side of the Moon.

First US visit as King:
In total, Charles has visited the United States 20 times, this being his first visit as the reigning monarch, King of England.

This trip that started yesterday with arrival and tea with US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melanie Trump. and today a private meeting in the Oval Office with the president.
The King’s mother, Queen Elizabeth II, also had addressed the joint Congress 35 years ago, and before that her father King George VI in 1939 accompanied by Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
