This year’s Easter statements from elected officials on Easter Sunday leaned heavily to explaining the religion behind the day.
Prime Minister Mark Carney reminded Canadians about the promise of renewal and redemption that is found in the Easter message. He sees the day as one of optimism for the future, saying that “compassion is stronger than hate, that light follows darkness, and that hope endures”.
BC Premier David Eby said that Easter Sunday is the most important day on the Christian liturgical calendar and goes into all the other details about days of the “long season of Christian observances” leading up to Easter. He talks about “the ultimate power of love and the importance of self-sacrifice”.
Eby also acknowledges the popularity of hiding treats for children to find on Easter morning, making the day popular with children.
Messages from both elected leaders entirely avoided any mention of politics whether domestic or global.
Easter weekend has been four days long for many people, starting with Good Friday on April 3, through Saturday and Sunday, into Easter Monday today. For families, communities and politicians it is a good long break for many.
