The windstorm has taken out the signal lights on Millstream at McCallum as well as Millstream at Treanor Roads in the Langford commercial area.

A wind warning since around 7am has been in effect from Environment Canada for gusts up to 90 km/hr. As of 2 pm, the strong winds continue.

City of Langford Engineering reported the loss of signal lights incident around noon today. They ask drivers to obey the four-way stop procedure and avoid the area if possible.

No restoration time for the traffic signal lights has been given yet. [Update: the signal lights came back on when BC Hydro restored the power to that section of Langford, later in the afternoon.]

That stretch of Millstream Road is heavily travelled on Saturdays for its offerings of a wide range of retail shopping and services including Millstream Shopping Centre, Home Depot, Staples, PetroCan gas station, and a range of grocery and fast-food outlets.

Traffic delays will occur in the area of the Millstream Overpass at Highway 1 (Trans Canada). Langford Engineering suggests the use of Exit 15 at the Shell Station/McCallum Road or Exit 16 the Leigh Road Interchange.

Langford Fire Rescue is reminding everyone that although it’s calming down a bit  that if you don’t have to be out please stay home, says Langford Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Lance Caven.  There is essentially no snowfall today but many road areas are still slippery and strong winds can contribute to unexpected circumstances.

“We have been mainly busy with power lines down and trees down,” says Caven. “Yesteday there were a couple of calls for trees that hit homes with minor to moderate damage.”

“We have had a few minor motor vehicle incidents, mainly cars into ditches,” says Caven.

Yesterday firefighters attended a call in Westhills where the condo building behind Belmont Secondary School experienced a broken drain in the condos sprinkler system due to freezing temperatures. An alarm rang for about 10 minutes. “Luckily the water only went into the parkade,” says Caven.
