A comprehensive road improvement project is getting underway on Charters Road in Sooke, and will carry on through most of 2024.
The contractor is Hazelwood Construction Services.
The project will focus on enhancing the infrastructure along Charters Road, spanning from Golledge Avenue to Throup Road, aiming for substantial completion by year-end.
Charters Road is often travelled for access to DeMamiel Creek Golf Course and Journey Middle School (both have access from Throup Road).
Monday to Friday:
Construction activity will take place from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Monday to Friday, with the potential for occasional work outside of these hours as required by project requirements, says the District of Sooke.
“Given the road has been functioning as single-lane alternating since November 2021, we do not currently anticipate significant traffic disruption during the early stages of work,” the District said today.
Single lane traffic:
Throughout the working hours, a Single Lane Traffic (SLAT) system will be implemented to facilitate the upgrades while ensuring continued access to local traffic.
Those travelling in the area are advised to exercise caution, follow traffic control personnel guidance, and adhere to signage in the designated work zones.
Summer 2024 impact:
It is anticipated that during the summer months, a temporary road closure will be in effect at the “existing dip” for upgrades to the Throup Creek Culvert.
Residents will still have access to Charters Road from both the Golledge Avenue and Throup Roads sides; however, the thoroughfare will not be accessible for through traffic during this portion of the project. As specific dates are known, the public will be notified.
Info to property owners:
Every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to residents and mitigate disruptions to daily activities, but some are inevitable, the District of Sooke said in a news release today.
Property owners that are neighbouring the works will receive additional communication from Hazelwood, the District said.
Together, Hazelwood Construction and the District of Sooke, extend gratitude in advance for the community’s patience, understanding, and cooperation throughout this vital enhancement for the Sooke community.
