The Jack Webster Foundation fosters and celebrates excellence in journalism to protect the public interest for British Columbians.
The 2023 Jack Webster Foundation gala evening to present top awards is set for Tuesday November 14 in Vancouver. Tickets go on sale Tuesday September 12.
Today the winners of two top awards were announced:
- 2023 Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award: Frances Bula. In 2022 the winner was CHEK-TV, and in 2021 was The Tyee.
- 2023 Bill Good Award: The Global Reporting Centre (UBC School of Journalism). In 2022 the winner was Stephen Hume. Before that John Daly was the winner in 2020.
Shelley Fralic Award:
A fairly new award, only in its second year, is the Shelley Fralic Award.
The Shelley Fralic Award honours a BC journalist who identifies as a woman, and who exemplifies Shelley’s legacy as someone concerned with excellence in journalism and making her community a better place.
In 2022, the recipient for the first Shelley Fralic Award was Jennifer Thuncher, Editor, Squamish Chief. This year the Shelly Fralic Award has been awarded to Sophie Lui, news anchor/reporter with Global BC.
This year’s set of nominees has included Mary P Brooke, Editor and Publisher of Island Social Trends, based in Langford, BC.
Lieutenant Governor’s Award announced:
On July 25, the winner of the 2023 Lieutenant Governor’s BC Journalism Fellowship recipient was announced. The winner is Vancouver Sun reporter Kim Bolan.
The award is provided in the spirit of supporting a healthy democracy with a thriving journalistic community; the fellowship aware is about producing a piece of long-form journalism to shed light on a subject of importance to British Columbians.
Bolan will produce a series of articles about the increasing international tentacles of BC gangs and organized crime groups.
