The shortest day of the year comes on the winter solstice, which happens this year on Friday December 22 at 7:27 pm.

BC is currently on Standard Time. Daylight savings time ended for this year on October 29.

Celebrating the return of light:

The Friends of Sooke Parks Society (FSPS) is hosting a Winter Solstice Lantern Walk on Thursday December 21 at 6:30 pm in John Phillips Memorial Park. Everyone welcome.

Bring a battery powered lantern and gather at Sooke Municipal Hall for a beautiful, wintry stroll through the park and along Stickleback Trail.

The Sooke Region Museum hosted a lantern-making workshop on December 16 in preparation for this.

To make lanterns at home, here are some links with videos and/or instructions to follow. Lanterns should help illuminate the walk through the park.

DIY Lanterns at home:

The event has been sponsored in part by the District of Sooke.
