Construction of the overpass across Island Highway (Highway 14) in Colwood will continue over winter.

For pedestrians and cyclists this means a continued Galloping Goose Trail detour through winter into spring 2026, as notified by the City of Colwood Engineering department on November 5.
The City of Colwood says that “completion of the Galloping Goose Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge in Colwood is targeted in advance of the 2026 funding deadline”.

Night work was scheduled for the last week of August to crane the steel spans which were constructed offsite by Surespan into place.

At night, the overpass hangs darkly over the road with no lighting. It seems to change the previous open-feel ambiance of the drive through Colwood.
Funding:
This new pedestrian and cycling overpass was made possible with a grant of $3.6M from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program.
Active transportation:
Creating a safe, seamless connection is one way to encourage more residents and visitors to choose to active transportation, i.e. travel in and around Colwood on foot or by bike.
The City calls the Galloping Goose a “picturesque multi-use trail that runs through the heart of Colwood as it follows the old railway line on its 55km journey from Victoria to Sooke”.
“This supports our community’s goals related to health and well being, easing traffic congestion, attracting customers to nearby businesses, improving air quality, and reducing our climate impact,” as stated by the City of Colwood.
