As of 4:17 pm this winter evening, December 15, Environment Canada says strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring for the Greater Victoria area.
Strong southeast winds of 70 km/h will develop near Haro Strait late this evening as a strong Pacific frontal system approaches. These winds will ease early Sunday afternoon in the wake of the system.
Meanwhile, with heavy rain and high winds in the weather forecast, Mainroad South Island said this evening around 10 pm that they are now on alert for the next 72 hours.
They will patrol the service area through the storm until the event passes, and roadways are clear and back to normal.
Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions due to high winds.
Mainroad South Island attends to road condition maintenance in the west shore region on Highway 1 up the Malahat and over to Shawnigan, as well as Highway 14 up to Sooke and Port Renfrew, and Highway 18 (Pacific Marine Circle Route).
Drivers are asked to use caution around road crews, and to drive appropriately for wet roads and foggy conditions. High winds can bring down trees and power/utility lines, therefore driving within regular speed limits is recommended.
