Windy conditions are expected today through to Wednesday in the Greater Victoria area.

The Capital Regional District (CRD) is asking residents to secure their blue box materials.

Recyclable materials that become scattered outside of the boxes can create neighbourhood clutter, cause safety issues (flying objects, or being driven over by vehicles), and reduce the amounts that are normally expected as intake to the recycling system.

Tips:

  • Put out blue boxes in time for pickup but not sooner, to reduce exposure to windy conditions.
  • Place the blue box on top of cardboard to hold it down.
  • Pinch the tops of blue bags to prevent paper being released into the wind.
  • Crush any cans, bottles, and containers — condensing recyclables makes them more dense and less likely to blow away.
  • Put heavier items on top of lightweight items.

Consider holding:

If securing the items from windy conditions is not possible, hold your recycling materials for the next pickup day.
