UPDATE/CLARIFICATION [April 21]: WSPR says this is an opportunity to register to make sure your child has a space in summer camp, but that they are still waiting for orders of the Provincial Health Officer to allow small group activities. If you register but camps cannot proceed for July/August, you will get a full refund.
======= ORIGINAL POST:
Even while COVID-19 continues, the 2020 summer camp portion of the West Shore Parks & Recreation (WSPR) program guide is available on the rec facility’s website for the community to preview and plan accordingly.
Other aspects of the May–August WSPR Activity Guide are on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The guide would have been initially prepared in the period just ahead of the official declaration of the pandemic (which happened March 11).
Summer camp registration begins May 7 at 8:30 am online or over the phone. Main reception phone number for registration is 250-478-8384 or register on the www.westshorerecreation.ca website.
The series of one-week camps starts June 29 and runs through to September 4, except for on Canada Day and BC Day (no camps on those holidays, July 1, August 3).
Each camp week has a theme, including “Out of this World Space Week”, “Colour Craze”, and “Time Travelling”.
Families receiving a Child Care Subsidy can call for more information on how to take part (direct contact Carley Caines at 250-474-8664).
Camp benefits include being physically active and being outdoors, gaining self confidence, building friendships, and having fun!
Meanwhile, as pandemic conditions affect all pretty much all businesses and workplaces: “Staff remain busy looking at new and innovative ways to engage with the community to keep them healthy, happy and entertained while adhering to social distancing measures currently in place,” it was stated in a WSPR news release today.
Through the rest of April, watch for the daily release of a “Stay at Home ADVENTurous Calendar” on the WSPR Facebook page. This daily activity offers fun, learning something new every day, and for stretching your muscles all from the comfort and safety of your home or within your neighbourhood.
Stay at Home ADVENTurous activities to date have included baking bread, doing a family bootcamp, planting a start-up garden, filling a time capsule and making puffy slime. New activities are released daily through Facebook and an archive of past activities can be viewed either through past Facebook posts or on their website.
As a continuation of positive community engagement, WSPR staff have deemed the month of May as “Physical Literacy Month” and are using the opportunity to keep the community active and engaged while at home. A series of short videos produced by recreation staff will be released throughout the month to showcase what Physical Literacy is, why it is important and how people can become more physically literate.
For more information on summer camp registration and the stay at home family activities, see the WSPR website and social media channels.
