This morning the Capital Regional District (CRD) responded to a break in the water supply main leading to the Sooke River Road Disinfection Facility.

The facility services approximately 13,000 residents in Sooke, East Sooke, parts of the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area, and T’Sou-ke First Nation (click here for map).

The water main break was identified at around 6 am today in Sooke Potholes Regional Park, north of the water treatment plant. As of 4 pm there was no change to the situation.

The CRD says that residents in the Sooke Drinking Water Service Area should reduce all discretionary water use until the break is repaired.

This means using less water both indoors and outdoors. Here are some examples of what people can do:

  • No watering of lawns
  • Limited watering of trees, shrubs and vegetables
  • No washing of outdoor surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks and decks
  • No washing of vehicles and boats
  • Strive for five-minute showers
  • Turn off the tap when lathering hands, brushing teeth and shaving
  • Wash full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine
  • Reuse water from washing and cooking vegetables

“Every effort is being made to minimize impacts to water quality and supply,” said the CRD in a news release around noon.

“The location of the break has been identified and crews are onsite preparing to make the necessary repairs,” said CRD.

CRD says the situation is being actively assessed and they will provide updates as details are confirmed or should additional action be needed by residents.
