US President Donald Trump this morning said that a trade deal between the US and Canada could be achieved in short order, perhaps even this week.
He was addressing media at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta this morning alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Canada is the host country for this year’s G7 Summit.
“The G7 is nothing without US leadership,” said Carney to Trump during their media session.
Global trade and security are the key topics for the G7 discussions by all the leaders today.
Trump’s remarks:
“We have different concepts. I have a tariff concept and Mark has a different concept which is something that some people like,” said Trump during the media scrum. “But we’re going to see if we can get to the bottom of it,” said Trump.
“I’m a tariff person, I’ve always been a tariff (person). It’s simple, it’s easy, it’s precise and it just goes very quickly,” said Trump.

“And I think Mark has a more complex idea but also very good. So we’re going to look at both and we’re going to come out with something,” said Trump.
Is a deal achievable within days or weeks, Trump was asked? “Yeah, it’s achievable but both parties have to agree, for sure,” said Trump.
But he said the primary focus of the summit, for Trump, will include trade with Canada “and we will see if we can work something out”.
Complaint about G7/G8:
Trump emphasized his displeasure about how the G8 became the G7 when Russia was excluded from the summit of leading nations.
“It made life more complicated,” said Trump.
Russia was dropped from the G8 in 2014 after invading Ukraine. Canada’s prime minister at that time was Stephen Harper (though today took the opportunity to blame former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau) and the US President at that time was Barack Obama.
