Today Prime Minister Justin Trudeau answered a media question in Ottawa with a simple and conclusive “yes”.
He is staying on as the Liberal Party leader past a ‘deadline’ of October 28 that was presented to him during a lengthy Liberal caucus meeting yesterday.
With a bright jovial delivery, he gave that simple confirmation of his intention to lead the Liberal Party into the next federal election.
It was actually smart politics for him to let disgruntled MPs air their concerns to him face-to-face yesterday; that would have been a very informative exercise for Trudeau as he sorts out the next federal campaign strategy.
Almost always Trudeau is surrounded by cabinet ministers during his press conferences. Today the photo backdrop was entirely backbenchers.
Trudeau seems to relish the idea of preventing Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre from forming a Conservative government next year.
“We’re focused on winning the next election and we’ve got a great team around us to do it,” said Trudeau today during the immigration announcement media session in Ottawa.
Next election:
The next federal election is presently scheduled for October 20, 2025.
But it could come sooner, given the unrest of a minority government and the push for change that the Conservatives are capitalizing on in public opinion polls.
