Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be in Victoria this afternoon, Thursday July 18, to make a public transit infrastructure announcement with BC Premier John Horgan at the BC Transit building on Gorge Road East.

Apparently there is some expectation of a protest of some kind, outside the building ahead of the announcement by Trudeau and Horgan.

The media announcement came from the premier’s office but is sub-billed by the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure. This heralds news of some sort of significant federal investment in transportation infrastructure in the south Vancouver Island area.

For most of 2019 a South Island regional transportation strategy has been in the works by Minister of Transportation & Infrastructure Claire Trevena, including an initial announcement of the regional transportation strategy rollout to the Victoria Chamber of Commerce in January 2019.

In March 2019 the southbound lane project on Highway 1 received federal funding, which was announced by federal Public Services Minister Carla Qualtrough together with Trevena. In that case, the federal government contributed approximately one-third of the project cost (providing $4.9 million of the $16 million project budget).

More details to come later today.
