Today the media had been invited to a short outdoor news conference outdoors at the BC Legislature. But snow had been falling overnight Sunday into Monday morning across south Vancouver Island, and at 5 am the notice was issued that ‘due to weather’ that media availability was cancelled.

Too cold for TV cameras perhaps, and also road travel conditions were not the greatest.

Trudeau was in Vancouver and did a one-on-one Global TV interview there. But getting to the BC Legislature on Vancouver Island was off the itinerary.

So the discussion between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and BC Premier John Horgan — which was to have occurred before the media question session this morning — took place by teleconference. And here are the notes:

  • “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with British Columbia Premier John Horgan today to discuss common priorities.”
  • “The Prime Minister and the Premier discussed international relations, and the Prime Minister offered his condolences to those in British Columbia who have lost family and friends in the Ukraine International Airlines tragedy in Iran. He also thanked Premier Horgan for British Columbia’s contributions to fighting the Australian wildfires. They also discussed the implementation of the new NAFTA and relations with China.”
  • “Other priorities discussed included climate change, housing, child care, challenges facing the forestry sector in British Columbia, continuing to move ahead on establishing a liquefied natural gas sector in British Columbia, including implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on the electrification of the natural gas sector that was signed last August, transport and cultural infrastructure initiatives, salmon fisheries, and gasoline prices in British Columbia.”
  • “The Prime Minister commended the Premier for his government’s actions toward implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and agreed that governments will continue to collaborate on implementing federal legislation on Indigenous children, youth, and families.”
  • “They agreed to continue working together on these and other issues, and look forward to the next First Ministers’ Meeting.”
