TownePlace Suites by Marriott begins construction in downtown Langford

Six-storey, 103-room TownePlace Suites by Marriott is scheduled to open in Spring 2027.

The official groundbreaking for the newest Marriott Hotel in Langford took place today at 830 Goldstream Avenue.

The construction site for the six-storey, 103-room TownePlace Suites by Marriott is on the city’s main street, in a densifying urban area of commercial and, residential including a nearby post-secondary campus.

Scheduled to open in spring 2027, the hotel will feature one-bedroom and studio units with kitchenettes, an indoor pool, fitness facilities and flexible workspaces. The hotel is designed for both extended stays and weekend getaways.

The location will be handy for athletes and performers coming to be part of events at nearby Starlight Stadium (located not too far away on Langford Parkway) as well as students and families coming to take part at the new Royal Roads University Langford Campus (aka John Horgan Campus) just one block away.

On this hot summer day, the afternoon speeches by VIPs were attended by about 80 people. The emcee for the afternoon gathering was City of Langford CAO Darren Kiedyk.

Four generations of the Chu family attended. The Chu family will be in partnership with Marriott for the hotel that is expected to meet a significant demand in that part of town.

There are two other Marriott Hotels in Langford — the Four Points Sheraton on McCallum Road and the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa.

“Langford is becoming increasingly popular not only as a place for families in which to settle, but also as a destination for visitors to explore and build memories with families and friends,” said Langford Mayor Scott Goodmanson at the podium today.

“This development will be more than just a hotel. It will serve as a home away from home for athletes competing at SS for students and visiting faculty members coming together at the John Horgan post secondary campus opening next month, and for visitors from around the world exploring Vancouver Island,” the mayor said.

“The new hotel will enhance Langford’s ability to attract more international events and visitors, enriching the culture and quality of life for residents and visitors, while directly boosting our economy,” said Goodmanson at the podium.

The City of Langford has a hotel tax that puts revenues back into the community.

“This project also aligns with Council’s strategic plan for a thriving downtown, the city’s five-year tourism strategy, our upcoming economic development plan, and fulfills our tourism aspects of the City’s newly adopted Official Community Plan,” said Goodmanson.

“To the Chu family and the experience development team, thank you for choosing Langford for this significant investment. We look forward to celebrating the grand opening and welcoming visitors to our community to experience all that Langford has to offer,” said Mayor Goodmanson.

Holden Chu represented the four generations of the Chu family; his son and grandson attended today. His grandfather arrived in Canada in 1919 and the family worked hard. The family opened the first Asian restaurant in Langford in 1969; Holden said he and his sister learned a work ethic, and a sense of family and community.

“My dad never wanted to sell this land,” said Chu, speaking of his 91-year-old father Stan. “He wanted something built here for the family and the community – not just another condo, but something that would last for generations and give back to the people here.”

The project is a partnership between Ho Goon Holdings, Sargent Construction and Metropolitan Hospitality Management, operating together as Stan’s Landing in honour of Stan Chu’s legacy.

Brian Cant, President of 4TVI (tourism Vancouver Island), a social enterprise dedicated to ensuring that travel benefits Vancouver Island, spoke at the podium. He said that the new hotel demonstrates that Langford is “a place to be and a place to visit”. The hotel won’t be just for visitors but an integral part of the community.

“Communities have to be welcoming to visitors after residents feel their pride in the place in which they’re in,” said Cant. He pointed out that “tourism is resilient” as a key part of the economy. He said that properties like the new Marriott are “starting to bridge the gap” between now and what tourism and communities look like in 2040 and 2050.

Long-time west shore business man and property developer Len Wansbrough addressed the crowd; his company Metropolitan Hospitality Management is a partner in the new venture. Phil Needham is the VP of Finance for the project.

Wansbrough highlighted the rooms and features of the upcoming hotel, including complimentary hot breakfast and smart workplaces, tailored for extended stays and weekend getaways for tourists and business travelers who come to the fast-growing west shore area. The new hotel is seen as part of supporting the economy and the business community. Marriott Bonvoy Hotels has over 8,000 hotels worldwide and a world-class loyalty program that brings people from all over the world, said Wansbrough.

Jeff Kibble, the new MP for Cowichan-Malahat-Langford, addressed the crowd. He thanked the Chu family for their ongoing contributions to the City of Langford. “To see a legacy like this going forward is truly amazing,” said Kibble.

The newly elected MP’s Langford constituency office is right next door on Goldstream Avenue. he acknowledged the contributions through jobs and investment that will come into the community through this hotel project. “It’s part of building our community, keeping our economy stronger, and making more affordable for everybody,” said Conservative MP Kibble.

Westshore Chamber of Commerce President Kelly Darwin attended and spoke at the podium saying that the Chamber “champions development”.

With gold-coloured shovels, the official ground-breaking was made official.

Also attending at the groundbreaking were City Councillors Kimberley Guiry, Colby Harder, Lillian Szpak, Mary Wagner, and Keith Yacucha; Langford Fire Chief Chief Aubrey; outgoing West Shore RCMP Officer in Charge, Todd Preston who is retiring tomorrow after 29 years; Inspector Stephen Rose will now be the Interim Officer in Charge; and several Langford senior staff.

This development was approved by City of Langford Council in June 2024.
