Municipalities are getting on board with ‘buy local’ in the face of economic threat from the current United States administration.

The Town of View Royal council at their February 18 meeting last night passed a motion to amend the Town’s purchasing policy.

In recent weeks the City of Langford and District of Saanich have taken similar directions.

The Province of BC is setting a leadership tone for this, including having a BC cabinet committee the economy and tariffs.

Moving forward the Town of View Royal will focus on the following priorities for purchasing items and materials, stating there will be a preference for items produced, manufactured, assembled, or grown in Canada.

“In View Royal, we’re committed to buying Canadian products to support our economy and community. Every purchase we make as a town helps build a stronger Canada,” says Councillor Damian Kowalewich.

“RFPs will offer first choice to Canadian companies,” says Councillor Don Brown. “Sometimes that will require paying a bit more but we’re looking at the jobs its creates and the economy as a whole,” says Brown.

Electric vehicles are a priority for the municipality. Three suppliers of electric trucks assemble the vehicles in Canada (Toyota, Chrysler and Chevrolet), says Brown.
