Yet another sailing on the major Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay (Vancouver-Victoria) BC Ferries route was delayed due to a medical situation with one of the passengers.
It was the 6 am sailing today departing from Tsawwassen. At 6:28 am BC Ferries advised media and BC Ferries customers that the departure would be delayed as “one of our customers is in need of immediate medical attention that requires the vessel to return to Tsawwassen (Vancouver)”.
Thankfully we live in a society and BC-culture where the concern for individual well-being is given priority.
However, the scheduling impact for people who rely on the major vessels as part of the on-water highway of this province is probably wide-reaching. It’s more than inconvenience — delays can impact attendance at meetings and appointments or visits with family, or the organized schedules of visitors and tourists.
It might be time for BC Ferries to include on-board medical care as part of its services, going forward. Especially as four new major vessels are in the design phase toward launch of the first new ship starting in 2029.
