All the staff have been laid off, though some before that asked to be let go. This is the reality of COVID-19 impact on a local coffee shop, the little business that grew.
The Stick in the Mud coffee shop in Sooke that launched on a dime in July 2007, managed through the Great Recession based in large part on people’s desire for caffeination, expanding to a few pop-up locations from time to time, and through expansion to producing their own brand of ground beans that could be sold online.
It’s the bags of beans that will help The Stick get through this new economic challenge.
Today Monday March 23, the doors will be open at their 6715 Eustace Road location for bag-of-bean sales only, 9 am to 11 am. “If that goes we will take orders and be open again later in the week,” says Stick owner David Evans.
“We will keep going for as long as possible. One or two staff are on call as casual labour. Mail order has not been affected and that will continue while Canada Post stays at it. There is no plan for take out or delivery of food or drinks,” Evans told West Shore Voice News.
