Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have reached agreements in principle.
But the two parties have not yet finalized tentative collective agreements for signing.
Yesterday, Canada Post stated in an email to its business customers that it has agreed that all strike/lockout activity is suspended.
However, CUPW says it will retain the right to strike until new agreements are ratified.
Union statement:
“After more than two years of negotiations, we have reached agreements in principle with Canada Post covering both postal bargaining units. This means both sides have agreed on the main points of the deals, but we need to agree on the contractual language that will form the collective agreements that would be put to a vote by the members,” says CUPW President Jan Simpson in a news release on November 21.
“Should the Tentative Agreements not be reached because the parties disagree on how the agreement in principle is reflected in language provisions, the suspension will be lifted for both parties, and the Union may continue strike activity,” says CUPW.
Canada Post transformation efforts:
Canada Post reports an unprecedented $541-million loss before tax in third quarter of 2025, as revealed during their AGM on Nov 18.
Following direction from the government and the lifting of long-standing restrictions, Canada Post is starting a transformation to modernize the postal service, chart a financially sustainable path forward and better serve Canadians and Canadian businesses, as stated by the crown corporation on November 21.
The corporation emphasizes the importance of maintaining a competitive position in the parcel delivery sector.
Regarding letter mail and mailboxes, the Canada Post transformation will include:
- Updating letter mail delivery standards to provide more flexibility and reflect the modern expectations of Canadians;
- Converting remaining home delivery to community mailboxes, while investing in the company’s Delivery Accommodation Program;
- Modernizing Canada Post’s national retail network to better reflect where Canadians live, how they shop and how they use the postal service;
- Reviewing the process for increasing regulated stamp prices to streamline and shorten it, in line with the recommendations of the Industrial Inquiry Commission.
